While you can see these colors just about anywhere along the East Coast, some places are better than others. If you’re looking for a bit of fall color between now and October and heading up north, Aroostook County, Maine is one of the best places to visit this time of year! Here’s a list of the top five spots to visit when in Maine.
1. AROOSTOOK STATE PARK
Located at the southern end of Aroostook County, Maine, Aroostook State Park is open year-round and offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, including hiking and kayaking on the Allagash River. Over 14 miles of trails within the park winds through mixed hardwood forests and along lakeshores, offering views of fall foliage in all its glory.
2. HAYSTACK MOUNTAIN
Haystack Mountain is one of the most popular spots for fall foliage in Aroostook County. Visitors can explore this vast mountain range on foot or by car and enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding wilderness areas. Several trails throughout the park offer visitors stunning views of Haystack Mountain and its surrounding landscape.
3. PORTAGE LAKE PUBLIC BEACH
While the fall season might be a little chill to take a dip in the water, Portage Lake Public Beach is a popular spot to embrace Maine’s fall foliage. The beach offers uninterrupted views of the mountains dressed in fall foliage, with plenty of space to enjoy a picnic or throw a BBQ.
4. FORT KENT RIVERSIDE TRAILS
Fort Kent Riverside Trails Walk is a loop trail that takes you along the river, with many sections offering excellent views of the St. John River. The trail is flat and wide, making walking easy for all ages. However, some areas are not paved and can be muddy in spots during wet seasons. This trail is open year-round!
5. HEDGEHOG MOUNTAIN
Hedgehog Mountain is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Aroostook County, Maine. The mountain’s 3,001-foot elevation and varied terrain make it an ideal place to view fall foliage. Many trails range from easy to difficult, so you can choose which works best. If your legs feel like they need a break after exploring all of these trails, take a seat at the fire tower for a fantastic view of this beautiful area.
